Developmental Editing

What is it?

Developmental editing is typically the first stage of a story’s editorial journey and involves an in-depth look at the big picture of your manuscript, refining your ideas, shaping the narrative, and fixing any major plot or character inconsistencies.

Developmental editing:

  • Looks at the how, why, and where of your story.
  • Evaluates structure and pacing.
  • Ensures clarity, tone, and voice are consistent.
  • Provides in-depth feedback before copyediting.

Copyediting

What is it?

Copyediting is the next step once you’re happy that your manuscript’s
big-picture issues have been resolved. This stage involves fine-tuning the story’s readability, eliminating any repetition and character inconsistencies,
as well as tackling those pesky spelling, grammar, and syntax issues.

Copyediting:

  • Corrects spelling, grammar, capitalisation, POVs, and tense.
  • Improves readability and story flow.
  • Checks facts and continuity.
  • Adheres to your preferred writing style (UK/US spelling, oxford commas, etc.).

Proofreading

What is it?

Proofreading is the final stage of the editorial journey before book publication. This stage ensures no spelling or grammatical errors remain, and that your story is as ironed-out as possible.

Proofreading:

  • Corrects any remaining inconsistencies in spelling or style.
  • Eliminates issues with layout, typography,
    and page/word breaks.
  • Ensures formatting consistency.
  • Adjusts minor style issues.
